The need for re-structuring UNO

United Nations Organization(UNO) is an international organisation which was created after the Second World War to compensate for the failure of the League of Nations. The main objective of UNO is to maintain global peace and security and a rules based global order. The present structure of UNO represents a power distribution which was present during the 1950's and seldom represents the present geo-political circumstances.

UNO has many organisations out of which the United Nations security council is the most powerful one. There is an option of veto power for the permanent 5 nations in UNSC. This power has been time and again used by the permanent nations to secure their vested geo-political interests rather than to secure and maintain global peace. The veto power was given during that time so that it may be used sparingly to secure global peace and order. Many Asian and African nations had gained independence during the 1950's and it was assumed that the 5 permanent nations need to have some extra power to secure global peace in the fast changing world.

But today the world has changed in many ways with India becoming the 7th largest economy. Many of the South East Asian and Southern American countries have grown in size and contributes a sizeable share to the world GDP. In such a changed scenario, the UNSC need to represent the present geo-political circumstances. The developing world do not want be bullied by the developed world anymore. The time has come where the representation and powers in the UNSC has be more democratic to represent larger populations of the people. It is time for the developed to acknowledge the growth potential and the future human development potential prospects of the developing the world and give voting share accordingly.

Most of the developing nations are contributing significantly for peace keeping in the world. India is the largest contributor to the UN peace keeping missions. We are all seeing the aggressive nature of China being a permanent member. This is a classic example of how power can be mis-utilised when the power is concentrated in a very few hands. The US pulling out of the Paris agreement when it finds certain conditions not favourable to it, the unilateral pulling out of the Iran Nuclear deal are just a few instants. With 75 years gone, the UNO needs a strategic revamping to give more equitable share to the developing world depending on the changing circumstances before it becomes redundant !
