Is Mental Peace important?

The pursuit of mental peace or inner peace acquires importance at all times of life. But unfortunately we usually realise this only after a trauma.

What is mental peace?

It is a state of mind which is achieved from mental and emotional calmness, free from unnecessary worries, fears and stress. It is a happy and relaxed state of mind while doing karma or action.

Why is it important?

  1. To enjoy the existence of life! If we are constantly complaining about everything around us, can we really enjoy this one life that we have?
  2. To develop compassion and tolerance towards others. Once we start accepting the diversity of others and ourselves, we can appreciate the life to its fullest.
  3. To get proper sleep! When the mind is peaceful, we can sleep without any worries and can avoid all the sleep related illness.
  4. To enjoy the happiness more deeply. Being happy is a state of mind which happens without our obvious consciousness. But being aware that we are happy can lead us to bliss.
  5. To improve our relationships with fellow humans and the world. We feel the world around us in a way which we perceive the world. Happy, calm and peaceful perception will lead us to better existence.

How to achieve mental peace?

  1. Humans are social animals. We are constantly being influenced by external world around us. These influences can be positive or negative. Positive influences can act in a way which will allow us to progress while negative influences will degrade our inner peace. By curtailing the influences and the amount of time that we spend getting influenced, we can reduce our stress and achieve mental peace. There are literally n number of things which can influence us starting with television, social media, peer groups, advertisements, etc. Removing negative influences and negative people and surrounding yourself with positivity in life is very important.
  2. Understanding and achieving mental maturity that some things cannot be changed. We are often worried about unnecessary things which cannot be changed and which are not our cup of tea. We are worried that we cannot control something. Rather than this we can focus on what we can actually control and achieve. Irritations and inconveniences can be annoying, but it is foolishness to allow such petty things to decide your state of mind.
  3. Venting out the excessive energy within the body through physical exercise. Excess energy if unspent will inundate the brain with a myriad of thoughts and an endless vicious thought cycle will keep on running in the brain. Empty this excessive energy and the mind will become calm.
  4. Practising Dhayana can go a long way in achieving mental peace, but practising dhyana itself requires constant practise and guidance. If you want to do dhyana by yourself, then you have to start observing your breath, then thoughts and finally block out all the thoughts except the one which you want to focus on. Being aware of ones own thoughts is difficult which comes only through constant long term practise.
  5. Appreciating what we have, not being jealous of others and observing and enjoying the smaller things in life leads to better mental peace.
