Can lifestyle diseases be cured?

Yes, depending on your age, severeness of the disease and your willingness to recover from the disease, lifestyle diseases can be treated and cured over a long period of time.

What are lifestyle diseases?

  1. Also called "Civilisational disease" or "Non-communicable disease" or "Culturogenic diseases", they are not infectious and do not spread from one person to another. They are unique to each individual.
  2. These diseases can include High blood pressure, Hypertension, Diabetes, Stroke, Cardiovascular Diseases, Atherosclerosis, Obesity, Internal organ damage, Cancers, Parkinson's disease, Autoimmune Diseases, Alzheimer's Disease etc.

How are lifestyle diseases acquired?

Lifestyle diseases are acquired mainly from the way of lifestyle that we follow.
  1. Unhealthy diet, no exercise, smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, irregular sleep, chemicals in food, excessive medicine intake, lethargicity, depression, sadness, anger issues and the like will accumulate over a period of time and cause diseases.
  2. On the other hand balanced diet, proper sleep, prohibition of use of drugs and alcohol, non smoking, sufficient regular exercise, calmness, peace and happiness in the mind can give us a very long life with a good quality.

How to cure lifestyle diseases?

There are basically 3 ways in which this can be approached.
  1. Intake of medicines only: It provides temporary relief. This method involves continuous and rigorous intake of medicines without making an effort to change the lifestyle. This method is ineffective and becomes worse in the long run because of the side effects it causes. This method does not address the root of the problem which lies in lifestyle.
  2. Lifestyle changes: This addresses the root of the problem by enabling lifestyle changes by adopting healthy means to live. This is an effective method in the long run and needs a good amount of dedication and will power to live healthily over a long period of time. This method depends on the mind matter. The willingness of the mind is an important factor in determining its success or failure.
  3. Combination of medicine and lifestyle changes: This method addresses both the short term and long term needs. But this method requires a careful analysis by an expert on how much medicine and what lifestyle changes to make.

Should you be concerned about lifestyle diseases?

  1. Yes, as said earlier, lifestyle diseases are also called civilisational diseases. It not only affects the individual, but also the civilisation as a whole. We are all social beings. We influence and get influenced. The whole of society is an organic whole where if one part rots, it will spread to the whole society eventually.
  2. The "Global burden of disease report, 2019" which was commissioned by the World Bank indicates that there is a decline in infectious diseases and a rise in chronic diseases.
  3. This implies that the world today has more number of people suffering from non communicable diseases.
  4. Lifestyle disorders also increase the risk of a new infection in the individual due to reduced immunity. Eg:  Co-morbidities like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, etc associated with lifestyle disorders can increase the risk of death from COVID-19.
Finally, it is you who will decide how your life has to be shaped. Individual conscious decision with a positive attitude is the need of the hour!
